Thia Megia’s “Smile”

Just because Randy compared her voice to Michael Jackson does not mean she has to pick one of MJ’s song last night. The 15 year old girl thought “Smile” was original MJ’s song and was bluntly corrected by the producer. The girl absolutely has no idea that “smile” a very popular song is recorded by Nat King Cole and written by Charlie Chaplin.

Thia nevertheless performed well on stage in the beginning of the song. When the music jumped into a jazzy arrangement Thia lost it . I’d seen her perform in a David Foster show and I admit, when she hits the high notes its a downturn. Supposedly good singers open their mouth vertically in an “Ahh” to reach the pitch but notice how she opens her mouth vertically in an “Ehh” which results to a throaty voice rather than smooth and refined.

There’s a lot of room for improvement for Thia. She needs more maturity as a singer and performer. She looks awkward in her movements which questions her rhythm and musically. It also goes to prove that she can’t sing jazz and is a balladeer and nothing else. Well nothing else as for this time, unless she discovers her own style and make it her own.

Thia Meggia in American Idol 10 Top 10

Thia Megia, wearing the same sweater in bold crayon, shorts and ugg boots, looked like a lost child among appropriately dressed contestants. But this Philippine Pride made it to American Idol Season 10 Top 10. Thia who sang a slow song in perfect pitch brought solemnity to an otherwise loud competition. Her sweet voice was compared to Michael Jackson by Randy. At 15, Thia is a pro in the field of reality tv. She got into America’s Got Talent and lost. She also guested on Davide Foster’s concert. And that was it. No comment. Peace there all kababayans!

Surprisingly, Clint Jun Gamboa a half-filipino, karaoke host in San Francisco, did not make it to the top 10. The nervous Gamboa must have had an intuition he was never going to make it. He broke during the verdict. Gamboa has been my early favorite since he auditioned but when he sacrificed baby Jacee Badeaux during a group competition, I was discouraged. So it must have been karma… “What goes around, comes around.”
