While Filipinos lag behind its South-east Asian counterparts in the cognitive department, we have two outstanding Filipinos, currently breaking the news.
John Gabriel Pelias graduates Summa Cum Laude at the University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Pelias earned a record breaking grade weighted average (GWA) of 1.016. His GWQ is pulled slightly lower after receiving three 1.25’s the second highest possible grade in UP. He will deliver his valedictory speech in April 17, 2011. And by the way he is not the naked fellow on the left photo.
Meanwhile, Shamcey Supsup a Magna Cum Laude graduate of UP, won the prestigious Binibining Pilipinas 2011 brain and beauty contest last night, April 10, 2011. Shamcey also topped the Architecture Board Exam in July 2010. Her beauty, brains, personality and according to her her ‘values’ ensured her victory. Ms Supsup is from General Santos City, hometown of boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, boxing athlete Nonito Donaire, and Big Brother winner Milay.
Pelias and Supsup making the headlines is a pleasant relief from all the negative and depressing news, shadowing Noynoy Aquino and Kris Aquino’s lovelife, the skyrocketing prices of basic commodities and the bungled presidential communications group.
